El pronóstico de la insuficiencia cardiaca crónica (ICC) sigue siendo malo, a pesar de los avances recientemente efectuados en su tratamiento. Una de las causas para la escasa mejoría pronóstica obtenida es la no aplicación de las medidas terapéuticas adecuadas, debida a la enorme magnitud del problema de la ICC y a la complejidad del tratamiento. Los programas de intervención y educación en pacientes con ICC han demostrado mejorar la calidad del tratamiento y también su pronóstico, reduciendo ingresos y mejorando la supervivencia. Sin embargo, persisten todavía algunas dudas sobre el coste económico de estos programas y su relación coste-beneficio, así como si su utilidad es aplicable a todos los pacientes con insuficiencia cardiaca, independientemente de su edad, comorbilidad asociada o tipo de disfunción ventricular izquierda. En el presente artículo se discuten todos estos aspectos, centrándonos fundamentalmente en los trabajos realizados en España.
