I’ve just had the pleasure of reading a book entitled “Nuevas técnicas en ecocardiografía” (New Techniques in Echocardiography), edited by Tomás Cianciulli, Horacio Prezioso, and Jorge Lax. It has many good points: for example, the authors of the various chapters are persons of recognized international standing, and its length is such that it can be read in a reasonable time. Moreover, there is the additional graphic material, consisting of 41 video clips accessible online.

However, in my humble opinion, the main advantage of this work is that it “starts from scratch.” I don’t mean that it is a very basic book, but it is well structured, and it outlines and explains all the latest technical advances in echocardiography. Beginning with first principles, it explains the pathophysiological bases for potential findings and demonstrates their applications in daily clinical practice. It is an ideal book for those engaged in this type of technique, but especially useful I think for those who are entering the world of advanced echocardiography for the first time and really “do not know where to start.”

This book therefore provides a missing piece in the jigsaw puzzle that echocardiography can sometimes be.
